AwwaRF Research Supports Sustainability at Drinking Water Utilities
Linda Reekie and Jennifer Warner, AwwaRF project managers
Traditional challenges to water utilities, such as increasing costs, limited revenues, and growing demand, are being compounded and complicated by environmental changes and a volatile economy. Sustainability principles, the focus of a large body of AwwaRF research, can help water utilities meet the rapid changes and challenges presented by communities, ecosystems, and economics.

Control Strategies for Quagga and Zebra Mussels
Shonnie Cline, AwwaRF senior account manager
Zebra mussels and quagga mussels, first identified 20 years ago in the Northeastern United States, have now spread west into Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and California. The rapid proliferation of these invasive species highlights an urgent need for research to identify and develop effective control strategies. AwwaRF, the Southern Nevada Water Authority, and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California hosted a workshop of experts and stakeholders to develop high-priority concepts for utility-based research. Informational programs for water utilities have also been planned.

State of Science of Molecular Techniques for Application by Drinking Water Utilities
Misha Hasan, AwwaRF senior project manager
The application of appropriate molecular techniques to microbiological water quality issues needs to be brought out of the research laboratory and into practical use for drinking water suppliers. AwwaRF and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency co-funded a research project that is evaluating molecular methods currently available, assessing the realistic application of these methods to the needs of the drinking water community, and developing a research plan for moving some of the most appropriate techniques closer to routine use.
