On October 2-3, 2007, an Expert Workshop was held at Marina del Rey, California to get input from water industry experts on the development of suggested research projects for the EDCs and PPCPs Strategic Initiative. The workshop attendees included water utilities, consulting firms, universities, the USEPA, and AwwaRF staff. The workshop was facilitated by Ed Means of Malcolm Pirnie, Inc. This workshop report was developed from a white paper that summarizes the state of science and the expert workshop.

The Awwa Research Foundation and the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) conducted a joint Source Water Protection Research Planning workshop in August 2007. The primary goal of the workshop was to develop a multi-year research agenda that would produce information to help drinking water suppliers design and implement effective source water protection programs while achieving compliance with the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water and Clean Water Acts.
This summary report describes the process used to plan and conduct the workshop, and provides the multi-year research agenda, a compilation of research needs identified by workshop participants and obtained via survey instruments.

Water Industry Climate Change Research Needs Workshop (pdf, 2.49 mb)

As input to the expert panel in development of a Strategic Plan for the Climate Change Strategic Initiative, an expert workshop was held in Denver, Colorado, on January 8 and 9, 2008. The workshop was co-sponsored by the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) and UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR). Fifty-seven participants from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia representing water utilities, private research institutes, academia, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), and consulting firms, as well as other industry professionals, convened to develop a comprehensive, multi-year research agenda spanning water, wastewater, and urban stormwater. The workshop report provides primary input to the expert panel’s effort to develop strategic initiative objectives.

Distribution System Water Quality Strategic Initiative Expert Workshop Report (pdf 1.59 mb)

As input to the Expert Panel in development of a Strategic Plan for the Distribution System Water Quality Strategic Initiative, an expert workshop was held May 30 and 31, 2007, in Englewood, Colorado. Twenty-one experts considered distribution system water quality concerns, and in breakout groups identified research projects to address high priority research needs. The workshop report includes a white paper on the state of knowledge in distribution system water quality that was prepared prior to the workshop to set the stage for productive discussions. Fourteen projects were identified by the workshop participants as particularly high priority, suitable for starting immediately. The workshop report was a primary input to the Expert Panel’s effort to develop strategic initiative objectives and the sequenced plan of projects to achieve those objectives.

An executive workshop was held June 18-19, 2007 in Boulder, Colorado to support the development of a guidebook for AwwaRF Project 4008, “Integrated Urban Water Management Approaches.” Twenty-four participants considered aspects of the Integrated Urban Water Management (IUWM) process though a series of presentations, breakout groups and plenary discussions to provide comprehensive feedback to the project team on the drivers for implementation of IUWM and all aspects of the IUWM process itself.

Water Sources Research Planning Roundtable

This planning session was organized and facilitated by AwwaRF staff in conjunction with the AWWA Water Sources conference on January 12, 2004. Thirty individuals representing water utilities, consulting firms, and professional organizations participated in the meeting. This was the latest in a series of Foundation-sponsored roundtable discussions designed to obtain input on high priority research needs, issues, and ideas from a variety of stakeholder perspectives.

Water and Wastewater Energy Efficiency Research Needs Workshop

This workshop was held in Sacramento, California on February 25-26, 2003.
The purpose of this workshop was to identify and prioritize research projects that could be jointly funded by AwwaRF and the California Energy Commission that would improve energy optimization at water and wastewater utilities. Buried Assets: Multi-Utility Buried Pipes and Appurtenances Location Workshop

UV In Drinking Water Treatment

On July 27-28, 2000, AwwaRF and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) sponsored a two-day workshop to identify issues that need to be addressed to improve the applicability of membrane technology for drinking water utilities. The goal of the workshop was to identify design, operations, maintenance, and regulatory issues that are limiting the widespread application of membrane technologies and develop a five-year research strategy to address these issues.
