UV has been used for several decades in the water industry. Its efficiency
against viruses
and bacteria has been well documented. Thus far, UV has been
applied primarily as
a polishing disinfection step to inactivate heterotrophic plate
counts or coliforms.
To make intelligent decisions as to appropriateness
of UV for a given application, the
water supply community needs a basic understanding of the
science involved in UV
generation, the reactor design, the microbiology, UV sensor technology,
dose-modeling
and other issues to enable proper system design and operation
and process optimization.
