Microbial risk assessment (MRA) is a relatively new tool for addressing the problems of waterborne infectious disease. MRA is a formal process for quantifying the health risks from pathogenic microorganisms, guided by a framework which defines the activities necessary to obtain information required to develop a quantitative model for calculating health risks
The American Academy of Microbiology, with AwwaRF as a co-sponsor, convened a colloquium in October 2006 to review the status of microbial risk assessment as it applies to waterborne disease. Assembled specialists in the areas of microbiology, biometrics, risk assessment, epidemiology, and microbial ecology discussed some of the controversial topics in microbial risk assessment, research subjects that could move the field forward, and the need for increased training and risk communication.
This report is based on the results of the colloquium and makes a number of recommendations to assist the water industry in dealing with microbial risk.
