The Awwa Research Foundation and the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) conducted a joint Source Water Protection Research Planning workshop in August 2007. The primary goal of the workshop was to develop a multi-year research agenda that would produce information to help drinking water suppliers design and implement effective source water protection programs while achieving compliance with the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water and Clean Water Acts. The secondary goal was to identify potential research partnerships that AwwaRF might pursue, given the complex, cross-disciplinary nature of source water protection and the extensive collaboration with other watershed stakeholders that is often needed.

Twenty-five people attended the workshop representing drinking water and wastewater utility professionals, consulting firms, federal and state government agencies, academics, and non-profit research and educational organizations including AwwaRF and WERF staff. This summary report describes the process used to plan and conduct the workshop, and provides the multi-year research agenda, a compilation of research needs identified by workshop participants and obtained via survey instruments. The report also includes brief biographical sketches of the participants.
