Small and rural water utilities make up the largest percentage of public water suppliers in the United States. Their need for solutions and technologies can differ from those of larger systems, often significantly. In order to assist these small systems, in 2007 the Board of Trustees approved the Small System Initiative. Through this program, research studies are funded to address issues of particular importance to small water systems. In addition, existing research findings that have implications for small water systems are synthesized and summarized into forms more suitable for use by these systems.
The research agenda for the Small System Initiative is developed through a Small System Task Force that includes representatives from the National Rural Water Association and the Association of State Drinking Water Administrators. AwwaRF currently allocates $250,000 per year for the program.
Small System Initiative projects typically are procured via open competitive requests for proposals (RFP). To submit a proposal in response to an issued RFP, see the guidelines for submitting solicited proposals.
